From Charley Bailey:
I’m proud to announce my campaign for Lieutenant Governor of Georgia.
I am committed to helping build One Georgia, where every person can expect to leave a better life with more opportunities for their kids than they had. I am committed to going to the state Capitol and fighting for equal justice and safe communities for every Georgian, regardless of their zip code or background. I will fight against the powerful interests that would do them harm and take advantage of them, whether that is special interests like insurance companies that don’t want us to take action to make sure every hard-working Georgian has healthcare, Wall Street predators who wish to take advantage of our retirees by targeting their pension funds, big corporations that don’t want to pay their fair share to fund our schools, or organized crime syndicates who victimize the vulnerable.
During my campaign for Attorney General of Georgia in 2018, we spread that message of using the office to protect Georgians from powerful forces that would do them harm. Even though I was running against an incumbent, our campaign got the highest vote share of any down-ballot candidate—second only to Stacey Abrams.
I planned to pursue that campaign again this year, but leaders in the Democratic Party asked me to consider running for Lieutenant Governor to help the entire ticket fight to win this fall and bring positive change to our state Capitol. After careful consideration, I have agreed to run for Lieutenant Governor this year.
All of the issues this team has fought for can be advanced by leading the Georgia Senate as Lieutenant Governor. We can fight together for regular people against powerful forces by ensuring that we provide healthcare access for working Georgians by finally expanding Medicaid. We can make sure that we fully fund our schools, reduce our class sizes, and pay our teachers more. We can make sure our law enforcement officers are paid a livable wage so that thousands aren’t living below the poverty line, and we can give our public safety agencies the tools to recruit and screen the best talents in the state. We can fund policies that will ensure that our law enforcement training will keep citizens and law enforcement officers safe and that officers will treat everyone they meet with the respect they deserve. We can fund the Georgia Bureau of Investigation’s state crime lab, so that police and prosecutors aren’t waiting for months or even years for ballistics tests. We can get the thousands of backlogged sexual assault kits tested. Those efforts will let us get justice for victims and ensure that innocent people aren’t wrongly in jail because evidence hasn’t been tested.
Together we can win, we can support Stacey Abrams and the entire ticket and help them succeed, and we can fight to make the Georgia General Assembly work for people instead of the powerful special interests. I thank all of you for your support, and I hope you will join me on this new journey.
