Fayette County Board of Elections Weighs Sunday Voting, Reviews Voter Rolls
The Fayette County Board of Elections convened on Tuesday, September 22, tackling key preparations for the upcoming election cycle, highlighted by a debate over advance voting schedules.
Sunday Advance Voting Set for October 25
The focal point of the meeting centered on requests from the public and local voters to offer advance voting on October 18 to align with the nationwide “Souls to the Polls” initiative. Resident Tonya Stai addressed the board during public comments to request the date, and board member Zach Livsey noted a strong influx of emails advocating for the change or the addition of a second Sunday.
Elections Director Brieanna Garrett confirmed that while the schedule could legally be amended through September 28—and that funding an additional Sunday would cost approximately $8,000 within current budgetary limits—logistical concerns remained regarding site availability and potential voter confusion. Board members Sharlene Alexander and Andrew Rose voiced concern about overburdening poll workers with two consecutive weekend shifts.
Ultimately, the board voted to keep the existing schedule intact. Sunday advance voting will remain on October 25 from 12:00 PM to 4:00 PM.
Voter Roll Maintenance and Absentee Updates
During the public hearing, the board reviewed regular voter list maintenance. Since July, 122 voters have been removed from county rolls—82 due to death, 37 standard cancellations (relocations), and 3 felony convictions. Fayette County's total active registration currently stands at 99,916 registered voters.
Director Garrett also reported that absentee ballot operations are underway, with 1,163 applications received to date.
Staffing and Outreach
The elections office welcomed new Operations Manager Mr. Herbert and highlighted recent public engagement, including a nursing home health fair and a well-attended "Elections 101" session. Fayette County will also host an upcoming Region 3 election equipment showcase, with formal invitations to follow soon.
November 4th
The U.S. Senate’s latest vote to pass a stopgap funding bill to end the partial federal government shutdown failed on Nov. 4. That means the shutdown, which started Oct. 1, will continue.
The stopgap bill, which would restore government funding until Nov. 21, was defeated after a 54-44 vote. It needed 60 votes to pass.

Anybody born in this country deserves to be here as much as anyone else. And our friends, family members, neighbors, coworkers, and loved ones living in this country—regardless of their citizenship status—belong and are welcome here.

Why is this important?
Trump's attack on birthright citizenship is unconstitutional, and it's just one part of MAGA's far-right playbook to scapegoat our immigrant neighbors, all while Trump makes life easier for his wealthy friends and harder for everyone else.
If this Congress votes on this order, they must resoundingly reject this brazen attack on our Constitution and its discriminatory agenda that threatens the very fabric of America.
Trump's promises of deportation raids and family separation policies are in practice unpopular—morally AND economically. Yet, he remains undeterred, because the true goal isn't efficient policies—it's scapegoating immigrants, fueling division, and creating a distraction while he and his billionaire allies profit at the public's expense.
Congress must take action and refuse to concede to Trump's assault on our Constitution. Re-litigating the question of who gets to be a citizen is just another attempt by Trump to divide us and further advance a discriminatory America.
